Quit Talking, Tony!

Tony Dungy has banked a lot of public goodwill. It almost seems like he is White America's "Black Friend".

Sure, he won a Super Bowl but so did Barry Switzer. Almost no one really takes Barry Switzer very seriously.

Is it time for everyone to recognize that Tony Dungy really doesn't know what the heck is talking about?!?!

To backtrack, our collective suspicion should have been raised when Mr. Dungy said this:

If I was a general manager, I would probably take Colt McCoy first because there's less questions about him (than Tim Tebow).

Colt McCoy first?!!? Ouch!! Think he'd like to have that back? (Considering Colt McCoy was drafted 85th overall and his poor camp performance led to speculation that he might get cut... I would think so.)

And that comment was made late in the draft process. Previously he had stated that he would take Tim Tebow over every other quarterback.

But, you may be asking... hey Furriners, why are you bringing this up now?

Well, while it didn't draw much attention in Detroit, Mr. Dungy recently stated that he thinks Seattle was the best team in the NFC. Seattle!?!!? What is he smoking?

Does he want that comment back after Seattle went to Oakland yesterday and lost by 30 points?!?!

I might suggest Mr. Dungy pursue a new line of employment where being an idiot is not a problem... perhaps Fox News is hiring?

I Knew This Was Probably Too Good To Be True

I think it's safe to say that the loyal readers of Furriners that don't actually exist know that we do not think highly of a certain couple rookie quarterbacks.

Here is where I have posted on Jimmy Clausen.

I posted this on Tim Tebow.

What our currently non-existent readers may not know is that we also do not think highly of Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy. And, in fact, I have previously mentioned McCoy in this blog a couple times.

So I got to say I was a little giddy when I read that McCoy was "on the bubble" for the final 53 man Browns roster. Alas, newer reports cast doubt on the previous report.

Regardless, everyone seems to agree that McCoy's career is off to an inauspicious start.

My recommendation: if the Browns need another QB, they could get Matt Leinart from the Cardinals... he would make a solid #3 QB.

By the way and for the record, Sam Bradford has not been much better. I have restrainted myself from yelling "I Called It!!" because it is, of course, WAY too early for that - but here is what Rotoworld said about Bradford a couple days ago (8/24):

If Bradford doesn't play better than he has, it will be a concern for the organization.

If I were a Rams fan, I would have been concerned the second they turned in the card to pick a System QB with the #1 overall pick.

Oil Slick In The Gulf

I was watching The Rachel Maddow Show yesterday and Rachel while discussing the ongoing environmental disaster off the coast of Louisiana, Rachel actually said this:

The slick is now 100 miles by 45 miles, making it roughly the size of Ohio

Ummmm... has she been to Ohio? Or even looked at a map? Actually, I know Rachel loves maps... it is an endearingly geeky feature of Ms. Maddow. But it should be obvious to everyone that Ohio is a helluva lot bigger than that!

Don't worry, Ohio, they say bad things come in threes and consider this:

1. The Browns released Derek Anderson.
2. The Browns waste a 3rd round pick on Colt McCoy.
3. Rachel Maddow states you are a fraction of the size of Vermont.

That is three... so I think LeBron re-signs with the Cavs this summer. Does that make up for losing DA? Of course not! But you guys will have to make do.

You Cannot Be Serious?!?!

I saw a headline today at espn.com that says "Texas QB McCoy leads finalists for Heisman".

Well, I watched the Big 12 Championship Game and I charted the passes of Colt McCoy out of that infamous spread offense. Here is what I found:

Passes behind the line-of-scrimmage: 11-11 for 59 yards. 0 TD & 0 INT.

Passes over the line-of scrimmage: 9-25 for 126 yards. 0 TD & 3 INT. (0-2 on passes over 20 yds from l.o.s.)

So just remember that when considering how impressive it is that he completes ~70% of his passes. I have nothing against the guy - but I'm not at all certain he merits a first day pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Here are some other observations for the weekend in college football:

Is Eric Mangini running the Nebraska offense? That was pathetic!

Ndamakong Suh is a beast!

Demaryius Thomas of Georgia Tech had another long touchdown reception (70 yards). Thomas is averaging 25.1 ypc and has 9 catches of 50+ yards. I am very curious if he'll declare for the draft and what type of 40 time he'll run (www.nfldraftscout.com is projecting/predicting/reporting -not sure which- that he'll run ~4.59 and go in either the 1st or 2nd round).

C.J. Spiller was very impressive this weekend. Mel Kiper projects him to go mid 1st round. It's too bad - as he would make a good complement to Kevin Smith for the Detroit Lions.

As good as Spiller looked... I'll say it again. If there is one back in college football who really looks to be a future NFL franchise back - it's Trent Richardson from Alabama. Mark Ingram (my vote for the Heisman) is better now - but Richardson has the higher upside. I guess it's like Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders back at Oklahoma State in the late 1980s.
