Scientist have a term called "negative bias" which describes how our brains are built with a greater sensitivity towards negative information. A lions roar elicits fear in some and peaks interest in others. Evolution dictates that those with a higher negative bias had a higher rate of survival since they were inherently more afraid of possible predators.
While this was of great benefit to our early ancestors, the negative bias of today has much less to do with survival as it does information gathering. In this sense the need for a negative bias has diminished as we have evolved. Unfortunately Republicans still have a very high negative bias as demonstrated by their fear of everything which proves they are lower on the evolutionary scale. While I have no scientific proof for this, Republicans don't believe in most scientifically proven things so this is right up their ally.
